He does not loose sight of that honesty in bringing you the good and bad, the beautiful and the ugly, always using that strong pathos that makes you long for knowing what will come next, even if you already know or guess. He treats his books acknowledging this, that is no textbook, and he stays truthful to that. I heard him speak in a young reader’s festival in my hometown in Italy, and he said that yes, he never lived through many of the experiences of his novels, but I believe the greatness of his prose is in the fact that it is fiction, and he knows and wants it to be so. The Absolutist is poignant and true, as many of Boyne’s novels are. Expect tears, expect angst, expect great literature. The books re-lives Tristan memories of training and war, but also of when he came back and looked for this other soldier’s sister. I would say more… well, I would say Tristan and William became very close, in a way that at the time was a crime. Will faces the fights and after a very significant one decides to renounce violence, and make a difference.

The Absolutist tells the story of Tristan Sadler. If you are looking for perfect characters, straightforwards plot and lovely walks in the park than forget about it. He has the talent of Irishmen for literature, that is undoubted. John Boyne is a great novelist, no doubt about that.
